No brainer here folks, driving takes ones full attention to do it safely, if your fiddling around with a cell phone your full attention is obviously not on your driving

Just because other things are bad too, doesnt make something not bad. Because people do other inappropriate things while driving doesnt make talkin on a cell phone OK. Its kinda like saying killing someone with a baseball bat is OK because people do it all the time with knives and guns.
Driving while talking on a cell phone is horribly stupid. Why should you risk the lives of yourself and people around you for some small talk? If its that important, then just pull over for 5 minutes. Its not hard.
The main reason is that its active and ongoing distraction. A cd is somehting you fumble with for a few seconds (if youre not smart enough to do it at a stoplight). many people talk on the phone the entire time theyre in the car.

I do this cell phone thing all the time. It’s stupid and extremely dangerous and i need to be frightened senseless with the prospect of a serious fine to stop me from continuing

I agree with you on the other distractions causing accidents as well. In my opinion, cell phones should not be used while driving because if a person is on the phone talking, they are taking away from their concentration of driving. Many don’t think so but it’s true. I’ve seen so many people on the phone while driving & they break all kinds of traffic laws & don’t use common sense when the cell phone is imbedded in the side of their face. If a person has to use the cell phone, do the safe thing, & get off the road first. I’ve been behind drivers on their cells & they slow down & are under the speed limit big time. Why? It’s because their concentration is elsewhere. Time for cell phone laws.

There is never enough saftey items on a vehicle to help people pay attention more than when they are on the phone. Lets face it, all the cars of today damn near drive themselves. We got Laser guided cruise control, cars that parallel park themselves, DTR lights, Driver-Passenger-ceiling-side airbags, ABS, ESP (electronic stability program), traction control etc etc…. But the largest issue is the driver! We have dumbed the automotive realm down so much that people are oblivious when driving and becoming a nuisance to those that can drive.
This legislation is starting in Pennsylvania and if it does go through I will truly be happy. How ever the next ban will need be women that put on makeup while driving and people reading the paper or any paper while driving…..Yeah thats right I said it! And you know who you are cause you are always in front of me on Interstate 79 in the morning.
NEWSFLASH! Get a handsfree wireless earpiece for your cellphone or dont take the call. While I am ranting, wake up earlier to put your make up on or to read the paper you get at your morning pitstop in your parking lot at work!

ride a street bike for just 1 season….and u’ll find out real quick why cager’s on cell phones is basically ranked at #1 on our ‘most lethal threat’ list, and why we would sooner take the phone and smash it on the road on sight after 1 of them pulls out in front of us because they’re too interested in what’s on the phone. i’d say after the 3rd car, u’ll understand. they drive like they’re drunk also.

It takes focus away from driving when you have a phone held up to you’re ear. I use Onstar hands free calling when in my Tahoe as it is just like talking to the passenger next to you.

Okay, I’ll be lone voice of opposition here.
Here it is in a nutshell:
Enforce the laws on the books, we don’t need more safety laws!
The problem with cell phone use (and other portable electronic devices) in the car, is so many people seem to forget how to drive while using them. People make sudden moves, they weave in and out of thier lane, they forget to signal. Others notice this activity and then they notice the phone, so immediately it’s the phone’s fault that the driver has allowed himself (or herself) to become distracted. If we’d just enforce the laws we already have on the books, we’d eliminate these problems without the need to pass more safety laws, many of which, don’t even make any sense! Come on, you mean to tell me a person who is talking on a hands-free device is that much safer than one holding a device? Good grief, I have driven with one hand on the wheel most of my life. If someone is driving erracticly, failing to signal, or otherwise breaking the law, they should be pulled over and fined. Cell phone or not.
Distractions have always been present while driving. Distractions will always be present. Many occur even outside the vehicle! (People gawking is a big one.) Communications devices have been around for years. Would you take a CB radio away from a truck driver? Of course not! But that same truck driver is expected to obey the rules of the road while using his CB. It’s not any different for cell phones, GPS, On-Star, or God-forbid, a laptop computer. People need to have enough sense to put the priority of the road AHEAD of everything else. If they cannot handle that, I don’t think another safety law on the books is really going to make any bit of difference for that kind of poor driving.
AND… Once you start down the road of banning cell phone use, what really is next? Talking on a CB? Talking to ON-Star? Adjusting a radio? How about talking to Passengers? Yeah, let’s outlaw them too.
Chastise me if you want, but that’s my two cents.

Personal opinion here, based on conclusions reached by observations.
As was pointed out in another answer, things like CD players are an intermittent distraction, while a phone held to the ear is a continual distraction.
Many times phone conversations seem to take priority over safe operating practices. Turn signals are neglected, speeds are disregarded, traffic signals and signs are overlooked or ignored. Last night I observed a lady making a right hand turn while talking and making a passing maneuver into an intersection that took her into the path of a motorcycle that had right of way for the lane.
Should that type of disdain for the safety of others be allowed? She didn’t even stop talking or put the phone down. Operating your vehicle on the road is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. We should get this fact straight. It should also be noted that possession of a driver’s license is an indication of a minimum level of competence and knowledge - you are by no means a professional driver. If you are a professional driver, your license will reflect this.
I am not willing to subsidize some asshat’s lack of ability or attention to cater to their need to communicate with someone who is not in the vehicle. The person on the other side of the phone can not say ” Um, stop sign… coming up…”
