Vodafone, Orange and O2 owner Telefonica, have been competing for the right to sell the Iphone in Europe, but according to recent rumors, T-Mobile may become the iPhone’s official carrier for Europe.

Personally, I’d get the Voyager because the full touch screen on the Dare seems like it would be kinda annoying for texting and stuff. I like the Voyager cause it has both.

The Voyager is more like a cell phone for people who want both touch and real life buttons. You have both, and personally sometimes the touch thing annoys me, especially driving with a headset and having to push menu options for the bank or something and if I press 4 and it thinks i touched 7, it gets old. I calibrate touch and it doesn’t happen that often, but sometimes I just like being able to feel the damn buttons, and texting is a breeze on a full keyboard. I also love the lil tv antenna on the back for catching up on CSI episodes at the airport etc. (costs extra after the introductory month). Oh and I love the visual voicemail..

The Apple iPhone looks like its got more bells and whistles and those games where you just tilt the phone, those look way cool. But the iphone was made to work with AT&T. Some people are misinformed, it isn’t illegal to buy one for another carrier. AT&T has the exclusive agreement to sell them new only with their service, so no matter who you bought it from, they bought it to use on an AT&T cell phone line.
Since AT&T only has GSM cell phone service, even if someone bought one, and unlocked it to work with other cell phone companies SIM cards - and then sold it to you…

For an unlocked iphone you would need a cell phone company that broadcasts GSM signal. Verizon does not use that signal. So an iphone is not built to pick up the signal that Verizon is broadcasting. (Verizon uses CDMA which doesn’t rely on sim cards at all). Verizon will only activate the ESN (electronic serial numbers) of phones on their verizon inventory list. Of course since these are AT&T phones, an iphone will not be on this list. SO if you want to use an unlocked iphone, you need a GSM cell phone company, like Sprint, T-Mobile, Qwest, and of course AT&T.

when you first buy the phone you originally buy it without a contract, when you first connect it to itunes THEN you will sign up for a contract, and pick a plan.
now what you are gonna want to do is what is called unlocking, what your gonna do is allow the iphone to be used without the actual iphone plan. you will want to use the tutorials linked here:
to unlock and activate your phone.
once you unlock your phone then you connect it to itunes and itunes recognizes a normal phone.

If you want an iPhone like device, you can buy an iPod touch. It’s basically an iPhone without the phone, camera, and you can’t get internet just anywhere (no 3G internet connection), but there still is WiFi.

Also if you buy the phone from eBay, you can never update it if you are using another SIM, because it will permanently lock the phone if it finds a non-AT&T plan trying to update the iPhone, even if you “unlock” it. Also you can’t just use the phone without a SIM, your phone will simply just be an electronic brick. And AT&T will not unlock your phone for you, it’s common sense, because then they lose money.

And to clear up this other stuff. Other companies do not manufacture stuff for iPhones. And by the way Verizon doesn’t have SIM cards, AT&T Cingular does. But the other companies don’t make their SIM cards compatible with the iPhone for legal use, except for I think a company in Europe. And even if you buy an iPhone as a gift, you still have to get a plan. The same works for buying any other cell phone as a gift, you have to have a plan in order for it to work, otherwise like I said, it’s a dud.

So please don’t listen to the brainless fools that hear rumors from their “tech-savvy” friends. Listen to the geeks, we know what we’re talking about.

Also, you cant pay with cash at the apple store to buy your iphone. only credit cards. To many were buying them and selling them on ebay.

Ok, after reading some of the comments, and seeing negative feedback, ive decided to edit mine to prove alot of the negative rating people wrong. The iphone has been unlockable for ages. Here is a simple tutorial. Plenty of people have been using there iphones with different companies. this also allows for 3rd party applications. Everything works just like normal. Verizon phones are CDMA phones which is just a different cellular standard. there is GSM and CDMA. GSM companies are At&t, t-mobile. that actually all I can think off at the top of my head. Verizon and Sprint are CDMA. As long as it is GSM you can use your iphone. the Iphone is a GSM phone and has a slot for a simcard. originally it is programmed to only accept At&t sim cards, but this has been overridden. Also, In europe, Apple has signed contracts with certain companies to distribute the iphone in europe exlusively. Here is the UK’s O2 website that sells the iphone. O2 is a UK based GSM company, just like At&t and t-mobile. T-mobile also offers the Iphone in germany. works are taking place discussing canada’s release.

Even more ranting. For people saying you need a 2 year contract. False. Go on ebay. there are tons. think thousands made contracts just to sell it. no, cause they would lose money. thats why apple made it so you cant buy the iphone with cash anymore, cause so many people were just going in to buy the phone and not using it on At&t.

And for anyone that doubts any of this, you should read up on your french law. Due to a law passed in 1998, mobile operaters must assist customers in unlocking there phones. Therefor the iphone in france is unlocked!

So let me tell you how it would work for you. thankfully since you have At&t. you are fine. you can literally plug in your sim card and use the iPhone. The iphone is a heavy data user. Weather, Travel, Internet, Email. This all uses your data plan. Unless you have an unlimited data plan, I wouldent recomment an iphone. Get a data plan if your planning on an iphone. If you dont, expect a ridiculous bill.

The chinese knockoff looks significantly different than the apple iphone. There’s no chance at confusing the two side be side.

Ebay iPhone sellers are trying to dump as many unlocked phones as they can before the software upgrade later this week is sent out, because there is a very good chance that once you upgrade your software your phone will no longer work.

The price of the phone itself is fixed (depending on the variant chosen), what varies is the cost of the contract which depends on how many minutes, how much text and how much data traffic is included.

The LG VU is also a touch screen phone and the data plans are cheaper . only $15 verses the $30 for the iPhone however the browser is non existant compared to Safari on the iPhone.
